About us

Hello, my name is Ian and I am the creator of Custom Sonics. Like everyone else, I always wanted a metal sonic as a child so I used my dad's old tyre pressure gauge. With this, I felt like a mad man with a box, his robot dog but most importantly, his sonic!

How did we start -

2013

While bored on a lunch break  working at a college, I was talking to the Chief Engineer, Nigel (who happens to also be a genius). He taught me how to use the lathe and the mill. He then he then tasked me to make an item that uses all the skills he taught me on both machines, a test piece. So what else could I make? My first  sonic!

2014 Onwards

2014 came around and so did my cousin, Jamie. He is a massive fan of the show and when he saw this 'test piece' sonic that I had created, he wanted one. Unfortunately, I did not own the machines to be able to do this, but by complete chance my neighbour was selling a mini lathe. With this, I did it! I built my second sonic, this time by myself with the skills have learnt.

My brother, James, designed a couple of sonics which we constructed and took to our local comic con. This comic con would change everything as this is where we met Colin Baker. After talking to Colin for a while, we asked if we could get a photo and pose with him and he kindly agreed. As I handed him my sonic for the first time, he asked "where did you get this?". When I replied, "I built it in my garage yesterday", with a look of surprise and with a smile, Colin said "and you do this for a living?".

I said "no... but that would awesome..." to which Colin remarked to say, "well it's better than the plastic 'stuff' the kids keep handing me".

James and I walked away beaming, were we just told to build sonics by Colin Baker? and so Custom Sonics was born...
